Heaton Sainsburys: Etherstone Avenue junction improvements in store?1.25.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 22nd Oct 2009 We are advised that a planning application is expected before Christmas for the replacement of Sainsburys' existing store at Etherstone Avenue with a larger one to be built on the site of the current petrol station and derelict adjacent buildings. If permission is granted and the new store is completed, the old store would be demolished to make way for a larger car park. DOREEN and GREG met with Sainsburys representatives to raise local concerns, including the need to create additional local employment opportunities and improved recycling facilities, but most importantly improved traffic arrangements if the scheme is to go ahead. As a result Sainsburys are proposing to upgrade the Benton Road / Etherstone Avenue roundabout and replace it with a traffic light junction, as well as a better store entrance junction to improve the current rather dangerous one. This should make it easier to turn right from Cragside as this is not always easy at busy times and help restrict speeding on Etherstone. We are also asking for early demolition of the eyesore adjacent buildings - and would also like the Red Hall Drive / Etherstone junction improved if possible. Residents living near the site will receive a consultation letter from the council about the planning application when it is lodged, Feel free to contact us to let us know your views.
