Brownfield housing development essential in Newcastle East says Stone3.30.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 6th Aug 2009 Newcastle East Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman Greg Stone has issued a broad welcome to Newcastle City Council draft proposals for new housing sites over the next few years. The "long list" of possible sites will go out to consultation with local stakeholders in a bid to identify a long-term supply of land for new housing. Greg Stone said "Newcastle East has very little greenfield land for new housing as most has already been built upon. The key challenge for the city will be to bring forward a range of housing types and tenures on brownfield land in support of regeneration objectives. As such it will be important to enable development of surplus sites such as land close to the railway at Heaton Junction, as well as in the Ouseburn Valley, at St Lawrence Square, and at Walker Riverside."
