Labour government descending into chaos

3.30.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 2nd Jul 2009

As Gordon Brown visits the North East, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman Greg Stone has repeated calls for a General Election.

He said "It is increasingly obvious that Labour has lost the ability to govern, with even Gordon Brown's Cabinet colleagues recognising that they have lost the plot. The public simply does not believe Gordon Brown over the issue of public spending cuts, and it is increasingly obvious that the Government has simply run out of money and is making cuts already."

"On issues ranging from ID cards to Post Office privatisation to university funding to defence procurement the Government is simply not in control, and on the key issues facing the country, the Government is in utter confusion. There is a fundamental breakdown in the relationship between the Treasury and the Bank of England as to how the economy should be run, and on parliamentary reform, even senior figures like John Reid and Margaret Beckett are openly defying the leadership's plans".

"It is abundantly clear that Labour has lost the will to govern and lost the confidence of the British people. It is time for an election and it is time for them to go".
